Guru Siyag's Yoga

GSY meditation and round-the-clock chanting of the divine mantra given by Guru Siyag bring about the following changes in the practitioner’s material life:

  1. Freedom from physical diseases including aids diseases, etc.
  2. Freedom from addiction to any kind of intoxicating drugs and substances etc. GSY also frees the practitioner from a harmful dependence on food.
  3. Freedom from depression, insomnia, stress and other psychological disorders.
  4. Beneficial to students as GSY causes a manifold increase in grasping and retention, and ability to concentrate or focus mind on any desired object or subject.

GSY for kids

In their adulthood, most people reminisce about their childhood and remember it as a beautiful and carefree time. Kids are often advised by adults to enjoy their childhood because it is the only time in life when one is not burdened by thoughts of the future. However, this is only partially true. Certainly, kids are not mature enough to think about the consequences of their actions or what the future holds for them but they have their own sets of problems: academic performance, peer pressure, treatment from adults, societal environment and expectations, and much more. These stresses adversely affect a child’s behavior, food habits, physical growth, health, performance in school and their interactions with other children.

Guru Siyag’s Yoga (GSY) can alleviate the negative effect these problems have on kids, and also cultivate their latent abilities and talents. GSY is an easy-to-do meditation and chanting based practice that can be easily included in children’s daily activities in school and at home. The practice involves the chanting (silent, mental repetition) of a mantra, and meditation twice a day for 15 minutes each. When done regularly, GSY is seen to benefit children in the following ways:

  • Reduces Stress: It is popularly, and incorrectly, assumed that meditation means becoming thought-less. It in fact means quieting the mind. Let us understand this with an example: dirt is added to a glass of clean water and stirred thoroughly. The dirt swirls around the glass for a while and then gradually begins to settle down at the bottom. After a while the clean water is visible again. Much in the same way, when one meditates thoughts swirl around the mind for a while. The practitioner continues to focus on chanting the mantra. Soon thoughts settle down and the mind is quiet. When the mind becomes quiet, it has a calming effect on the entire body and stress is immediately reduced.
  • Improved Academic Performance: Reduced stress in turn increases alertness and sharpens focus. Students who practice GSY report an increase in their ability to grasp even the most complex subjects with ease. Increased concentration also means they are able to memorize and retain lessons quickly.
  • Reduced Anxiety and Depression: Every few days we come across cases of students who are crippled by fear of academic failure, and commit suicide. If their schools or colleges included a 15-minute break time for meditation, such tragic events could be averted. Students who practice GSY are better able to deal with exam stress and performance anxiety. Meditating before an exam, and even before studying, helps calm the mind and body down, and focus on the task at hand. GSY strengthens emotional equilibrium – in the face of failure, the student-practitioner is able to calmly evaluate the situation, and instead of being depressed or emotional, they prepare themselves for a better performance.
  • Out-of-the-box ideas: Creative thinking receives a big boost through GSY. Students are able to come up with novel ideas and concepts. This is especially crucial for students who want to get into research, innovation, design or any creative field.
  • Happier State of Mind: GSY Meditation has a positive impact on the student’s overall personality. They feel happier and self-assured. Many children describe feeling a growth in their optimism, confidence and their ability to face challenges and learning new skills. A happy state of mind also points to kids feeling less threatened by their peers and a disinterest in aggressive behavior. They are better able to empathize with people around them which in turn results in improved social skills and inter-personal relationships.
  • Promotes Evolved Thinking: By growing more empathetic, kids begin to grow more perceptive toward others’ needs, and also respond to them in an appropriate manner. In many instances, children give up a prized possession or savings to help the less fortunate. In others, children recognize bullying and are able to stand up against in their own or their friends’ defense.

Freedom from anger

  • All anger stems from the need to control our circumstances and the ensuing disappointment when that control is wrested from us. We clutch at this desire for control so strongly that when it is obstructed our own energy becomes fire; it burns us. Guru Siyag says, “A body is cremated upon death; fire reduces it to ashes. But anger consumes a person alive.” In our rage, we distance ourselves from all rationality and say or do things that cannot be reversed, and that sometimes do irreparable harm. In extreme cases, anger sets off events the repercussions of which bind us to them for life.
  • Therapists and other medical practitioners recommend several methods to deal with anger: express anger in a controlled and yet assertive manner, suppress it and redirect toward a more constructive activity or calm down through breathing exercises. In certain situations, for immediate effect, tranquilizers are also prescribed. All the above-mentioned methods are effective, but only to a degree. They may help a person manage their anger momentarily but cannot get rid of it completely. In other words, these methods help one take responsibility for the anger and direct its flow anger inward but they do not dissolve the anger entirely and permanently.
  • The expression of anger, says Guru Siyag, is a never-ending cycle, “You will vent your anger and set off the other person. The other person will not accept your anger quietly. Their retaliatory response will match your outburst. There is no end to it. It is like trying to dirty someone with muck and not expecting to be dirtied in return. Of course you are going to get dirty! People have perished over generations because their anger turned to hate and they could not break the cycle.” So how does one break the cycle? Guru Siyag says that anger can be dissolved only by pouring it into the endless ocean that is meditation. Instead of taking responsibility for the anger and owning it, the practitioner should look at it objectively — anger as an emotion by itself that does not have its root in another person or event.
  • In meditation you are not angry with someone. You are simply angry. Anger is an energy that is external and you have decided to let it enter you. Only when it enters you does it acquire a quality. It is angry at someone or frustrated with a situation or enraged by an activity. In meditation, anger becomes quality-less. Once faced with the anger, the practitioner must grab hold of it and release it into meditation. The anger that has come toward you is thrown into the cosmos. When a river flows into the ocean, it loses its own nature and becomes one with the ocean. So too, when anger is released into meditation, it becomes one with the cosmos. It loses itself and becomes the cosmos. This is, of course, not a one-time process but something the seeker must consciously do whenever anger enters. By and by, the anger will be dissolved completely. If it is not possible for you to meditate when faced with anger, begin chanting the mantra. Guru Siyag says, “As you feel the first waves of anger upon you, begin chanting the mantra. The vibrations of the mantra will bring into sharp focus the futility of your anger and dispel the power of anger over you. Instead of washing over you, this wave of anger will change its course and avoid you.”

Freedom from stress

  • Medical science treats stress with addictive medication (sedatives, sleeping pills, inhibitors etc.) that are seldom able to cure a patient. GSY also views intoxication as treatment but it is a kind of intoxicating Ananda(joy or bliss) brought on by regular chanting of Guru Siyag’s divine mantra. Sages have referred to this divine bliss as “intoxication without drugs.” The Ananda frees a practitioner from stress and stress-related illnesses such as depression, hypertension, insomnia, phobias etc. in a matter of days. Below, Guru Siyag explains this process in detail:
  • “All over the world, 80 per cent of diseases are caused by stress. Kali Yuga has cast a Tamasic (negative, dark, dull, inert) pall over mankind. Whether they are rich or poor, people are constantly under immense stress. Medical science is not able to treat stress. They only prescribe sedatives to calm the nerves. Senses are lulled and stress seems to abate until the effect of the drug lasts. Once the intoxicating effect of the sedative wears off, stress and related diseases are back. Even we (Siddha Yoga philosophy) believe that stress should be treated by intoxication. But the intoxication should not be caused by matter but by spirit. In Siddha Yoga, intoxication is induced by chanting the name of God (chanting mantra).
  • “Chanting the name of God brings about an intoxicating joy. It is a fact that this joy can be experienced by chanting God’s name. Indian mystics and saints such as Guru Nanak have referred to this joy as “naam khumari” (intoxication by chanting). Guru Nanak has said that intoxication by drugs wears off the next morning but intoxication by chanting never wears off. Another Indian saint, Kabir, has said that intoxication by chanting does not wear off. Instead, the intoxicating joy it gives grows every day. The mantra that I give is has the divine power of Radha and Krishna.
  • “Krishna was the ninth and complete avatar (incarnation). One more avatar is yet to come – Kalki. There is a lot of debate around the world whether Kalki has arrived or not. A lot of people claim they are Kalki. The one who is accepted on a universal level will be proclaimed as the Kalki Avatar. So, chanting God’s name brings about an intoxicating joy. In the Bhagwat Geeta, Lord Sri Krishna has referred to this as ‘Ananda’ (joy or bliss). There are five shloka (poetic verse) in the Geeta about this: The 21st shloka in the fifth chapter and four shloka from the sixth chapter — 15, 21, 27, 28. He has referred to ‘Ananda’ in several ways: divine ananda, ananda that transcends the senses and ananda produced by meditation on God. Until man experiences this ‘Ananda’ (joy or bliss), he is not able to differentiate between sukh (happiness) and ananda (joy or bliss).
  • “As long as a person has wealth, a great car, a house and family, he is happy. But if even a single item is taken away, his happiness is destroyed. So if this material happiness is true happiness then how is it so easily destroyed? This little girl here is sitting and playing, and is enjoying herself. She is not interested in what I am saying, and so finds no happiness here. When she is 20-25 years old, she will find happiness in something else. When she is about 70-80 years old like me, then she will find happiness in something completely different.
So this ‘happiness’ that people pursue, is one produced by the senses. It is not ‘Ananda’ (joy or bliss).
  • “‘Ananda’ is Akshay (indestructible). It is not ‘Kshsay’ (destructible). It is like Kabir said, “The intoxicating joy chanting God’s name gives, grows every day.” Chanting the mantra I give, will give you ‘Ananda’ (Joy or bliss). The ‘Ananda’ in turn relieves you completely from stress. The ‘Ananda’ stays with you night and day, and frees you from stress and related illnesses, and without the consumption of medication. Doctors of materials science find this very hard to believe.
  • I have advised the West to not concentrate on matter alone but also include the ‘spirit’. Matter plus spirit will spell the end of all kinds of diseases.”

Freedom from addiction

  • Every person has three intrinsic tendencies: SAttavic(pure, light), Rajasic (passionate) and  Tamasic (dull, inert). These tendencies determine not only the person’s overall mental makeup, outlook on life and actions, but also his dietary preferences or the choice of food and drinks he/she will consume. Regular practice of GSY facilitates the dominance of the Sattavic over Rajasic and TAmasic tendencies, leading to a change in the traits associated with the latter two tendencies. The dominance of the  Sattvic  quality in transforms the person’s inner tendencies toward positive, conscious, intelligent and pure thinking and actions. This in turn also changes his preferences of food and drinks. The overall result of this change is that whatever that is negative and detrimental to the person’s physical and mental wellbeing and spiritual evolution leaves him of its own accord — without the person’s conscious efforts to make this happen. Thus, if the person is afflicted with addiction to drugs, alcohol or smoking, the addiction will leave him involuntarily. If the practitioner is attached to food that is harmful to his health, he will gradually develop a natural dislike for it and turn to healthy options because of the change in his inner qualities and tendencies brought on by the chanting of the mantra and meditation.
  • Below, Guru Siyag explains the yogic process of de-addiction in his own words:
  • “The intoxicating joy brought on by chanting of the mantra gives freedom from stress and psychological disorders.
  • “One finds freedom from addiction as well. One does not have to quit the substance (drug); the substance will quit the abuser… So how does one become free from addictions? This happens because the practitioner’s Vrittis (tendencies) change. The universe was created out of the interplay of the three qualities of the illusory power called Māyā. These tendencies are: Rajas (passionate and energetic), Tamas (dark, dull, inert) and Sattva (Pure, enlightened, positive and wise).
  • The tendency that is dominant in the body will demand certain foods and you will have to fulfil this demand.
  • “If the Tāmasic tendency is dominant, then it will demand meat, alcohol because it sustains itself on these types of food. If you don’t satisfy these demands then you have to face a lot of problems. If someone has been addicted to opium for 20 years and suddenly stops consuming, he will die in five to seven days. But if he practices Siddha Yoga, he becomes addiction-free and does not die because his Vrittis undergo a change. Tamasic tendencies are the first to feel the impact of Siddha Yoga. Their demands come to an end.
  • “This subject (of Vrittis) is one of demand and supply. Once, Swami Vivekananda was delivering a speech in USA. A man in the audience said to him, “Swamiji you are wasting your time. We will never be able to do Yoga. The primary principle of Hindu philosophy is vegetarianism. We consume meat and alcohol. How will we be able to practice Yoga?” Swamiji answered, “You need not give up the things. The things will give you up.” This means you don’t have to quit consuming a substance, the substance will leave you of its own accord.
  • “I challenge you! Those among you, who are addicted, try consuming drugs from today onward. Try consuming this evening itself. You won’t be able to do it because the addiction will have left you. You won’t be able to consume drugs even if you want to.
  • “Thousands of people in Barmer are addicted to opium; it has the highest number of addicts. The opium comes across the border from Pakistan. That’s why people in Barmer consume opium. I tell them, “Don’t quit opium but do Siddha Yoga.” After this, thousands were freed from addiction. They say opium gives off a bad stink now. They can’t swallow it. Because of this change, these people have come today from Barmer.
  • “I never preach, “Quit using the drug.” I say, “Don’t quit.” Lots of Gurus preach, “This is right, that is wrong” and “Don’t do this, do that.” But who really follows this? People listen from one ear and throw the information out of the other. That is why I don’t preach.
  • What is important for you to know is that you don’t have to quit the substance. Many people force their relatives, who are addicts, to attend the program. They tell them that they will become addiction-free. The addicts are worried that they will have to quit using. I assure them that they don’t have to quit a substance. This makes them happy because they find no harm in listening to me speak for an hour.
  • “However, even when they don’t intend to quit the substance, the addiction leaves them in a few days. You too can become free from addiction. You will know now itself, during meditation, how it will happen. So, this is how Vrittis (tendencies) change. The desire that springs from a particular Vritti will leave you. If there is no demand then that means there is no need for supply. Only when there is demand, it has to be supplied. When the Vritti stops demanding, the supply stops too. This in turn means that you won’t be troubled by the addiction anymore. The desire that was forcing one to consume these substances disappears completely.”

Curing from disease

Question: Will my disease be cured as soon as I receive Mantra Diksha (Mantra Initiation) from Gurudev?

Simply receiving Mantra Diksha from Guru Siyag is not enough. The seeker must mentally chant (repeat) the divine mantra round-the-clock, and meditate twice a day for 15 minutes each to be freed from a disease or condition. Consistent and regular practice is the key to a speedy recovery. Since GSY heals holistically, it does not give results overnight. It heals the body gradually over a period of time. The seeker must, therefore, be patient and not feel disheartened if results are not visible right away. In rare cases, some patients have experienced recovery within very few days of practice. It was found that these patient-disciples had dedicated themselves completely and solely to Guru Siyag’s practice (had given up other forms of worship and religious rituals), had stopped medication and single-mindedly prayed to be healed.

Question: Now that I practice GSY, should I continue taking the medication prescribed by my doctor?

The patient must continue taking medication under two circumstances:

Patient is quite weak and does not have sufficient strength to consciously chant and meditate. Medication must be continued until strength is regained enough to do the practice consistently.

Patient does not completely trust the practice of GSY. If there is a lack of trust, the patient will constantly look for reasons to either quit the practice or signs that his condition has worsened due to the practice of GSY. In such a case, it is advisable to continue medication until the patient has built strong trust in GSY, and feels secure in discontinuing medication.

Special note: Guru Siyag does not discourage his disciples from seeking medical intervention or treatment. He advises them to place their faith in Yoga and accord it the same respect that they do to medicine. GSY, according to him, is way of bridging the gap between the internal and external, “I will show you a method by which the doctor within you can be awakened. I advise both patients and doctors to continue taking treatment from the external physical doctor — I don’t ever negate science. Science is a truth, but it is yet incomplete. Alexander’s Guru, Aristotle, was a great scientist of his time. He said that science is an incomplete philosophy but philosophy is a complete science. Yoga philosophy is a complete science. Science is only supplementary to this philosophy. I have never protested against science. But I do say that there is a doctor within you. The internal doctor guides the external one and that is the extent of the latter’s knowledge. The internal doctor has a lot to give you. I only introduce you to this doctor within you. It is your job to develop a friendship with him. This means that you will have to constantly chant the mantra I give you.”

How does Guru Siyag’s Yoga (GSY) cure diseases:

  • Diseases that humans suffer from are classified by modern medical science into two broad categories — physical and mental. These are treated with internal medicines and/or external medicines or therapeutic applications. Ancient Indian sages delved deep into the mysteries of life through meditation and learned that diseases are not caused by accidental exposure to germs or pathogens alone, as medical scientists believe. They learned that much of human suffering is actually caused by the actions of each individual in his/her past life. Each action leads to a reaction in the same life cycle or carried over to the next. Since each individual is trapped in an unending cycle of life and death, suffering through diseases and highs and lows of life continues ceaselessly. In other words, the spiritual Law of Karma — actions of the past resulting in diseases and other forms of suffering in the present life — governs human existence, life after life in a never-ending cycle.
  • According to yogic texts, sanskāra (deep impressions or seed habit patterns) of past lives and karma of the present one shape the course of our present life. In his treatise ‘Yoga Sutra’, the Indian sage Patānjali classified diseases into three categories – physical (Ādhidehik), mental (Ādhibhautik) and spiritual (Ādhidaivik). One can free himself completely from this Trividhi-Tāp (threefold affliction) only by taking recourse to a Siddha Guru and practicing Siddha Yoga Sādhanā (spiritual practice) regularly. Guru Siyag says, “Throughout the world only physical exercises are being performed in the name of Yoga. When I went to the United States of America I saw that there too, Yoga meant physical exercise. But the aim of the Yoga described in Vedic philosophy is Moksha or liberation from the cycle of life and death. In fact, Vedic philosophy does not speak of diseases at all. For instance, the Patānjali Yoga philosophy has 195 sutras (aphorisms) and none of those mention anything about diseases. The philosophy speaks of the ways in which the imprints (sanskāra) of past lives can be destroyed.”
  • Only regular practice of yoga under the guidance of a spiritual master like Guru Siyag can help the practitioner find a spiritual remedy for all his/her afflictions. The practice of GSSY helps a disciple to cut through the web of Karmic past, to get rid of diseases and to realize the true purpose of his / her life through self-realization (ātma sākshātkār).
